Fusion Proteins for Mammalian Cell Expression

Proteos Recombinant Protein Expression and Purification HSA Structure

Proteos is an industry leader in the production of high-quality recombinant proteins for drug discovery research.  There are many variables to consider when producing novel recombinant proteins.  These variables include selection of an expression system, construct design, and scale.  In the upcoming months, we will focus on the use of fusion proteins for recombinant protein expression in mammalian cell systems including purpose, selection, placement, and removal.

Recombinant proteins that are being produced for in vivo studies need to be biologically active and exhibit a reasonable half-life.  If the protein of interest is rapidly cleared in vivo, it will have a negligible duration of action and will need to be frequently administered. Fc and HSA are two fusion proteins that pose a solution to this problem by improving the half-life of their protein partner. The Fc and HSA fusion partners fold efficiently into stable conformations and can improve the solubility of the target protein. Importantly, Fc and HSA generally confer these benefits with minimal negative impact on the target protein’s function in vivo. In addition to in vivo applications, these fusions are also useful handles for affinity chromatography, immunoassays, and binding studies.

The next blog post will focus on selecting an optimal fusion partner for your mammalian cell expression project.  But, if you don’t want to wait, contact us now for more information. We will guide you through the process and design a custom quotation that fits your specific project needs.
